Before Moving Day Congratulations! You've bought a
new home. Now you are faced with the task of organizing your
move. But where do you begin? Well, start now by looking
over this list. You'll be surprised at how smoothly things will
go if you remember to:
- Arrange for cancellation of utilities; advise date to shut off
service and new address for final billing and/or refunds of deposits:
- Electric - Gas - Water - Telephone - Fuel - Cable TV -
Lawn Service
- Cancel deliveries or give notice of change of address to:
-
Post Office - Subscriptions - Charge Accounts - Creditors -
Diaper Service - Newspapers - Friends and Relatives
- Advise current bank(s) of address change, arrange for credit
references, and get enough cash or travelers checks to cover moving
costs.
- Make banking connections in new city...transfer checking and
savings accounts, be sure to include safe deposit box.
- Notify insurance company(s) of new location and any additional
coverages required for life, health, fire and auto. Check on
coverage of life, car and household goods en route to new home.
- Ask doctor(s) and dentist for referrals; transfer medical,
dental and optometry records and prescriptions.
- Obtain transcript of children's school records.
- Get copies of family birth and baptismal records.
- Find out regulations for pet license, vaccinations, tags, etc.
- Pick up laundry or dry cleaning.
- Plan use of foods to empty freezer and use up perishables.
- Have appliances serviced for moving.
- If buying new appliances or furniture, arrange for delivery at
new address.
- Purchase games, books, snacks and maps for trip.
- Drain gasoline from lawn mower and dispose of all flammables.
- Mark all cartons and barrels with room in which to be placed by
movers. Number each carton and keep an inventory list by
carton.
- Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator. Place charcoal to
dispel odors.
